The movement for grassroots climate action starts here.
The Climate Crisis Is Personal: Clean Energy Wins, Toxic Rollbacks, and the Fight for Our Oceans
The climate crisis is not a distant threat — it is here, right now, bearing down on the communities we fight for every single day. Storms are intensifying. Winters are shrinking. And the leaders who should be sounding the alarm are choosing silence while fossil fuel corporations write the rules. We have seen this playbook before. And we refuse to accept it.
We are a grassroots movement. We do not wait for permission to act. For nearly 250 years, democracy has been the foundation built not by billionaires or kings, but by everyday people who understood that caring for one another and protecting our future go hand in hand. That tradition is ours. That power is ours.
This week we are watching three stories that tell the full shape of this fight: proof that clean energy works when leaders commit to it; a brazen attempt to make Americans sicker by gutting the EPA; and scientists doing something extraordinary — and controversial — to help the ocean breathe. This is what the climate crisis looks like up close. And this is what people power, grassroots climate action, and the refusal to give up looks like in response. Courage. Education. Action. Let’s go.
🌪️ What’s Happening: Three Stories Our Protect Our Planet Movement Needs to Know About
The climate crisis generates noise every week. Here is what the noise is actually telling us — and why it matters to our fight.
💨 Spain Just Proved Clean Energy Is a Policy Choice — Not a Fantasy
While Trump dismantles clean energy at home, Spain is running more than half its electricity grid on renewables — in mid-winter. In January 2026, wind and solar hit 56% of national power generation, backed by 80+ gigawatts of installed capacity.1 This didn’t happen by accident. It happened because democratic governments committed, invested, and held the line against fossil fuel interests. The Atlantic
✊ Why it matters for democracy: The U.S. has the resources, the technology, and the workforce. What we lack is political will — and that’s exactly what our movement exists to build. When governments choose people over polluters, clean energy wins. Full stop.
☠️ Former EPA Staff Sound the Alarm: Trump’s EPA Is Deliberately Making America Sicker
Over 700 former EPA scientists released a report called ‘Terrible Toxics,’ documenting how the Trump administration has weakened or eliminated protections for 12 of the most dangerous pollutants Americans face daily — PFAS in drinking water, mercury, lead, benzene, and formaldehyde.2 The EPA has placed former chemical industry lobbyists in charge of regulating the chemical industry, buried its own health research, and created a mailbox for polluters to request legal exemptions. As the report states: EPA’s leadership “has chosen to make Americans sicker.” Mother Jones / Inside Climate News
✊ Why it matters for democracy: Children in fence-line communities are breathing what the report calls ‘a chemical cocktail daily.’3 When the people charged with protecting public health are former industry executives, that’s not governance — it’s a heist.
🌊 Scientists Pumped 65,000 Litres of Ocean Antacid into the Gulf of Maine. Here’s What They Found.
Researchers at Woods Hole released 65,000 litres of sodium hydroxide into the Gulf of Maine — the first open-ocean test of alkalinity enhancement, designed to help seawater absorb more CO₂ and counter the acidification dissolving marine shells worldwide. Preliminary results: 2–10 tonnes of carbon pulled from the atmosphere in four days, no measurable harm to marine life.4 But critics warn of unknown long-term impacts and fear geoengineering becomes an excuse to keep burning fossil fuels. The Guardian
✊ Why it matters for democracy: Scientists buying a planet in crisis more time deserve public funding and honest scrutiny — not budget cuts. And there is no geoengineering fix that replaces stopping fossil fuels. The only permanent climate solution is people power demanding we stop poisoning the atmosphere in the first place.
🔍 The Pattern: This Is What the Climate Crisis Actually Looks Like
Three stories. Three fronts. One war. Spain shows what’s possible when democracy works. Trump’s EPA shows what happens when it’s captured. The ocean experiment shows how desperate the search for climate solutions has become. The communities that did the least to cause this crisis bear the most of its weight. That is not an accident. It is a system. And our job is to dismantle it.
💚 Democracy and the Planet Are the Same Fight
Spain’s clean energy success didn’t come from a corporation’s goodwill — it came from democratic governments that held firm for years. Trump’s EPA isn’t failing by accident — it’s been handed to the industry it’s supposed to regulate. Protecting democracy is protecting the planet. When we stand up for people power, we stand up for a livable future for generations yet to come.
🌱 What Comes Next: This Is How We Win
📢 MAKE NOISE ABOUT THE EPA — Share the ‘Terrible Toxics’ report. Tell people what is in their water. Political silence on toxic exposure only works when the public doesn’t know.
🌬️ POINT TO SPAIN — When someone says clean energy can’t work, show them the data. 56% renewables. Mid-winter. An industrial economy. The argument is over.
🗳️ VOTE LIKE YOUR LUNGS DEPEND ON IT — Because they do. Climate and environmental protection live and die at the ballot box.
💧 DEFEND THE EPA’S MISSION — Contact your representatives. Demand they restore career scientists, reinstate PFAS standards, and end the polluter exemption program.
🌊 SUPPORT OCEAN SCIENCE — Back public funding for climate research. Scientists trying to save the ocean deserve resources, not budget cuts.
💚 BUILD PEOPLE POWER — Organize. Show up. Bring your neighbors. Every new person in this movement is a wind turbine for democracy.
Climate change is not a distant threat — it’s a present and growing crisis. We must rise to meet this moment with courage, education, and action. Together, we protect our planet and build a just, sustainable future for generations to come.
